 AvidBiotics Corp. is a biotherapeutics company deploying two proprietary, biotechnology-based platforms for multiple applications in life sciences. We are developing further Nature’s proven successes. With virtual operations commencing in 2005, the Company initiated its own lab operations in 2006.
Our first application is the development of protein products for the treatment of specific bacterial diseases of humans, with particular emphasis on antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Medical Need
From a human health perspective, there are approximately 500 million acute bacterial infections per year that require some form of antibiotic therapy (CDC). Nearly 2 million patients contract infections within health care facilities every year resulting in 100,000 deaths annually.
The frightening reality is that 70% of the implicated bacterial organisms are resistant to at least one antibiotic. In 2005, approximately $30 billion was spent in the United States alone on hospital-based infections. The estimated direct costs for drugs combating the drug-resistant pathogens are estimated at $5 billion.
These numbers are growing.
